West Bainbridge Elementary School has a very rich heritage that began in 1930 in a five-room building on the same site as the present school. The original building was demolished and a new one constructed in 1954. The new school consolidated New Salem Elementary and Brinson Elementary, and from 1953-1970 served the African American population of Decatur County in grades one through eight. As of October 13, 2004 West Bainbridge Elementary School moved to its current site located at 915 Zorn Road. The facility was funded by Special Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOS). In 1970, Decatur County Schools desegregated and West Bainbridge Elementary began serving all students in grades one through three in Western Decatur County. In 1984, a physical education facility was constructed on the campus. Due to growing enrollment, the construction of a new wing for the school was completed in 1986. The new building contains a library, an assistant principal’s office, and fourteen classrooms. In 1989, rezoning took place and West Bainbridge Elementary began serving students in Kindergarten through grade five from Western Decatur County.
