CUBE CREW FACTORY for Manufacturing Day at HES

How do you make a cube? At Hutto Elementary School, 3-5 grade students spent Manufacturing Day finding out, and they learned that making one cube is very different from making many.

Working to create cubes using 3D Pens at Hutto Elementary School for Manufacturing DayUsing 3D pens, students set out to "manufacture" cubes. At first, everyone worked alone with no plan. Some students finished quickly, some got stuck, and no two cubes looked quite the same. Then the real learning began. Students talked about what was slowing them down, divided the work into steps, gave each person a job, and built a system together. With a process in place, their teams produced cubes faster, and the cubes came out more alike.

Manufacturers study each step, find what slows things down, and improve the process so they can make quality products efficiently. Our students experienced that same thinking firsthand, and they'll build on it in future manufacturing projects this year.

Working with precision to create cubes using 3D Pens at Hutto Elementary School for Manufacturing DayThis lesson built on what students started at Summer STEM Camp, hosted by the [cy]BEARCATS robotics team, FRC Team 11214, where more than 140 students in grades 1 through 12 explored hands-on STEM activities. It is also part of a district-wide focus on understanding manufacturing at every grade level. At Bainbridge High School, students in the SMART Manufacturing pathway and on the [cy]BEARCATS team use 3D printers, CNC machines, and 3D modeling software to design and build real parts. From 3D pens in elementary school to CNC machines in high school, Decatur County students are learning that great things get built when people work together and follow a plan. Today's cube makers could be tomorrow's engineers, machinists, and designers. Every day we build brighter futures in Decatur County, after all that's the Bearcat Way!
